Accessibility Statement
Last updated: March 2026
HealthCalc India is committed to making our health calculators and content accessible to all users, including people with disabilities. We aim to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA — the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility.
1. Our Commitment
We believe health information should be accessible to everyone. Our calculators are designed to be used on a wide range of devices — from low-end Android phones to desktop computers — and we work to ensure they are usable regardless of ability or assistive technology.
2. What We Do
The following accessibility features are implemented across HealthCalc India:
- Labelled form inputs: Every input field in every calculator has an associated
<label>element. Screen readers can announce what each field is for. - Results use text, not just colour: Calculator result badges show category text (e.g., "Overweight", "High Risk") in addition to colour — colour is never the only indicator of meaning.
- Minimum touch target size: All buttons, links, and interactive elements have a minimum touch target of 44×44 pixels — meeting Apple HIG and Google Material Design guidelines for mobile usability.
- Readable font sizes: Body text is a minimum of 16px. Text scales with browser font size preferences.
- Keyboard navigation: All interactive elements (buttons, form inputs, links, dropdowns) are reachable and operable via keyboard. The navigation dropdown closes on Escape key.
- Focus indicators: Keyboard focus is visible on all interactive elements.
- Semantic HTML: Pages use semantic HTML5 elements —
header, nav, main, footer, headings in logical order — to aid screen reader navigation. - ARIA attributes: Navigation menus use
aria-haspopup,aria-expanded,role="menu", androle="menuitem"to communicate state to assistive technologies. - Language attribute: All pages declare
lang="en-IN"so screen readers use the correct pronunciation. - No flashing content: We do not use animations or flashing elements that could trigger photosensitive conditions.
- Colour contrast: Body text against background achieves a contrast ratio above 4.5:1 (WCAG AA). Large text and UI components achieve above 3:1.
- No-JS fallback: A visible, readable message is shown for users and crawlers with JavaScript disabled.
- Skip to content: Calculator pages focus directly on the relevant tool — minimal navigation overhead.
3. Known Limitations
We are transparent about areas where accessibility is not yet fully achieved:
- Screen reader result announcements: When a calculator result is shown, it is not currently announced via
aria-liveregions in all calculators. A screen reader user may need to navigate to the result manually. We plan to address this in a future update. - Complex results layout: The dual Indian/WHO result panel (side-by-side comparison) may not have the optimal reading order for screen readers on all calculators.
- Third-party ad content: Google AdSense advertisements are not under our control and may not meet WCAG AA standards. We have no ability to modify ad accessibility.
- Material Symbols icons: Some decorative icons use Google Material Symbols font. These are marked
aria-hidden="true"where they are purely decorative, but icon rendering may vary across assistive technologies.
4. Mobile and Low-End Device Support
HealthCalc India is designed mobile-first for Indian users, many of whom access the internet via mid-range or budget Android devices. We specifically target:
- Screen widths from 320px upward
- Single-column layouts on mobile that avoid horizontal scrolling
- Minimal JavaScript — all calculators work on older browser versions
- Async font loading — text is readable before custom fonts load
- No heavy animations or GPU-intensive effects
5. Standards We Follow
- WCAG 2.1 Level AA (partial compliance — see Known Limitations)
- HTML5 semantic structure
- WAI-ARIA 1.1 for interactive components
- Indian Government Accessibility Guidelines (GIGW) — where applicable to private sector digital health tools
6. Reporting an Accessibility Issue
If you experience any difficulty using HealthCalc India due to an accessibility barrier, we want to know. Please contact us at:
Email: contact@myhealthcalc.in
Please describe: the page or calculator you were using, the assistive technology or browser you use, and what you were trying to do when the issue occurred. We will respond within 10 business days and aim to resolve genuine accessibility barriers as quickly as possible.
7. Ongoing Improvement
Accessibility is not a one-time task. We review our calculators for accessibility issues when making significant updates. We welcome feedback from users — particularly those who use assistive technologies — as it helps us improve the experience for everyone.
